Form GSTR-10 is the final return filed after the GST registration of an eligible regular taxpayer has been cancelled. It reports the cancellation particulars, closing stock, input tax credit attributable to that stock, tax payable, and other information required to close the GST compliance cycle.
Cancellation does not erase tax, interest, return-filing, recordkeeping, or other obligations relating to the period before cancellation. The taxpayer must reconcile outstanding returns and liabilities before completing the final return.
LegallensIndia assists with GSTR-10 applicability, stock and input-tax-credit reconciliation, liability computation, document review, online filing, and responses to final-return notices.
GSTR-10 is the final return prescribed under Section 45 of the CGST Act and Rule 81 of the CGST Rules. It is filed electronically after cancellation of the registration of a person who was required to furnish regular returns under Section 39(1).
The form enables the taxpayer to disclose inputs, semi-finished goods, finished goods, and capital goods or plant and machinery held on the day immediately preceding the effective date of cancellation, together with the resulting liability under Section 29(5).
GSTR-10 is different from an ordinary periodic return and from GSTR-11. GSTR-11 relates to persons holding a Unique Identity Number and is not an alternative final return for registrations cancelled by a tax officer.
A registered person who was required to file returns under Section 39(1) and whose registration has been cancelled must generally file GSTR-10. This includes voluntary cancellation and cancellation by the proper officer.
Merely applying for GST registration does not create a GSTR-10 obligation when registration was never granted. The final return becomes relevant to an applicable registered person after a cancellation order is issued.
GSTR-10 must be filed within three months from the date of cancellation or the date of the cancellation order, whichever is later. The effective date shown in the order and the date on which the order was issued should therefore both be reviewed before calculating the deadline.
If cancellation is proposed to be revoked or challenged, the taxpayer should obtain case-specific advice. Filing the final return does not replace an application for revocation or an appeal.

Review the taxpayer type, cancellation order, effective cancellation date, order date, and the later-of-three-months filing deadline.
File all applicable returns up to the effective date of cancellation and reconcile any unpaid tax, interest, late fee, notices, or demands.
Identify inputs, semi-finished goods, finished goods, and capital assets held immediately before cancellation and link them to purchase invoices and ITC records.
Compute the amount payable under Section 29(5) and applicable rules, including the prescribed treatment of stock and capital goods.
Log in to the official GST Portal and navigate through Services, Returns, and Final Return to open Form GSTR-10.
Review auto-populated registration and cancellation details, enter the required stock, ITC, tax, and other particulars, and upload supporting certification where applicable.
Generate the preview, verify every entry, create the required challan, and discharge the liability through the permitted electronic ledger process.
Select the authorised signatory and file through DSC or EVC. Save the ARN and filed return for the statutory records.
Where the final return is not filed by the due date, the proper officer may issue a notice requiring filing within 15 days. Continued failure can lead to best-judgment assessment, recovery proceedings, interest, penalty, and the applicable statutory late fee.
Late-fee amounts may be affected by statutory caps and relief notifications. The amount shown by the GST Portal and the provisions applicable to the relevant period should be checked instead of relying on a fixed figure in isolation.
