An LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) Code is a 20-digit alphanumeric identifier used globally to uniquely identify legal entities involved in financial transactions. LEI registration improves transparency, enhances financial security, and reduces the risk of fraud by ensuring that each entity's details are consistently recorded across global financial markets.
Each LEI Code contains key reference information such as the entity's legal name, location, and corporate structure, enabling quick and accurate identification during financial transactions.

LEI stands for Legal Entity Identifier. It is a globally recognized 20-character alphanumeric code assigned to registered legal entities involved in financial transactions.
Unlike local registration numbers or Corporate Identification Numbers (CIN), an LEI follows the internationally accepted ISO 17442 standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
LEI Codes are issued by Local Operating Units (LOUs) accredited by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF). In India, Legal Entity Identifier India Limited (LEIL), recognized by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), serves as the official issuer of LEI Certificates.
A Legal Entity Identifier follows a standardized 20-character alphanumeric format defined under ISO 17442.
The primary objective of LEI Registration is to improve transparency, strengthen risk management, and enhance trust within the global financial ecosystem.
By assigning every legal entity a unique global identifier, LEI enables regulators, financial institutions, and businesses to quickly identify participants involved in financial transactions while improving reporting accuracy and operational efficiency.
LEI Registration is mandatory for several categories of entities that participate in significant financial transactions.
A Legal Entity Identifier plays a significant role in strengthening transparency and security across global financial markets.
An LEI Code remains valid for one year from the date of issuance and must be renewed annually to keep the entity information accurate and up to date.
For example, an LEI issued on 1st February 2023 must be renewed on or before 1st February 2024.
An LEI Code must be renewed every year to remain active. Failure to renew the registration before the expiry date results in the LEI becoming inactive, which may affect an entity's ability to participate in financial transactions requiring a valid LEI.
LEI Register provides flexible renewal options for 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years. Regardless of the selected renewal period, renewal reminders are sent approximately 59 days before the expiry date.
For multi-year renewals, the LEI Register also updates entity information using official company registries to ensure that all data remains current and accurate.
The following documents are generally required while applying for an LEI Code through Legal Entity Identifier India Limited (LEIL).
Every Legal Entity Identifier provides publicly accessible reference information that increases transparency in the global financial marketplace.
Level 1 information identifies the legal entity and includes:
Level 2 information provides details regarding the ownership structure of the legal entity.
According to the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), every LEI answers three important questions:
Obtaining an LEI Code involves a structured registration process through Legal Entity Identifier India Limited (LEIL). Before beginning the application, ensure that all required documents are available.
Download the document checklist and prescribed formats applicable to your entity type from the LEIL website under the 'Downloads → Legal Docs Download' section. Collect all the documents required before starting the application.
Create an account using the official email address of the entity. Only authorized officials empowered through a Letter of Authority or Board Resolution are permitted to submit LEI applications.
During registration, applicants must provide Company Information, Direct Parent Information (where applicable), and Ultimate Parent Information (where applicable).
After entering all the required information, proceed to the payment page. Applicants can make the payment through Net Banking, Credit Card, Debit Card, or Demand Draft.
Once the payment is completed, a reference number is generated and sent through email and SMS. This reference number must be quoted in all future communications and on every document submitted, including the Demand Draft (where applicable).
LEIL verifies the submitted application, supporting documents, and payment details. If any clarification or additional documents are required, LEIL notifies the applicant.
Applicants can log in to the portal and update or modify the application details whenever requested during the verification process.
After successful verification, LEIL issues the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) Code along with a digitally signed invoice. The LEI Code is delivered through the registered email address.
The issued LEI should be shared with all banks and financial institutions wherever required for regulatory compliance.
An LEI Code search allows businesses, regulators, and financial institutions to verify the details of a legal entity registered under the Global LEI System.
In India, entities can search for an LEI Code using the Search feature available on the Legal Entity Identifier India Limited (LEIL)website. The portal provides access to LEI information for Indian entities and also supports searches for entities registered in other countries.
The Global LEI Index, maintained by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), serves as the central repository for LEI information worldwide.
Users can search using:
The search results generally include the LEI status, registration status, country of registration, and details of the Local Operating Unit (LOU) that issued the LEI.
